What is wood glue?

Wood glue comes in a few different types, and each has a varying strength dependant on the bonding application you will be using it for. Simply put wood glue is used for the purposes of bonding wood together in woodworking projects like those undertaken in carpentry or joinery.

Why wood glue?

Sometimes it is not always possible or preferred to use nails or screws to hold wood in place, wood glue works by creating a strong bond between two pieces of wood holding them securely without the need for nails.

Types of wood glue

PVA - Polyvinyl acetate or PVA for short is the most common type of wood glue, it is ideal for a lot of woodworking projects however it isn't suitable for all.

Hide - Comes in the form of flakes, granules, liquid, or sheets that need to be dissolved in water and applied with a brush.

Epoxy - Epoxies are some of the strongest wood glues available, and when dried is waterproof and seals gaps.

Polyurethane - These glues are moisture activated and foam whilst drying. They are resilient and sturdy creating a strong bond.

Considerations when choosing a wood glue

Bond strength - In some cases you will require stronger bonding, in the case where toughness is key then epoxies are the way to go.

Can wood glue be used as wood filler?

You can use wood glue as a filler, simply mix with sawdust and apply to the crack or gap in the wood. Once applied allow to dry for 24 hours and then sand.

Is wood glue effective on plastic?
Wood glue lacks the bond strength to effectively join non-porous surfaces like plastic.
